I still stick to Breckenfeld's 1st translation, let's look again:
"In the early 1980s, he became a dominant figure in popular music and the first African American entertainer to amass a strong (racial) [crossover] following on MTV".
the first African-American/ adjetivo + entertainer/ noun
to amass/ verb
a strong "crossover" following [ a = article + crossover = adjective + following = noun ]
If "following" is a noun than it can't bem a verb, right? It is not rocket-science, really.
"following" as a noun means a group of followers or enthusiasts
Public media tends to be politically correct, then maybe the word "racial" before "crossover" was dropped for that reason.
