following on MTV

In this phrase "on" refers to MTV and not to "following" (which is, as you say, a noun and not a verb).

This must be very confusing to some, but it sounds perfectly normal and correct to our ears.
As a test, try saying the sentence without "on MTV".  Does it make sense?  Sure it does.  Now try it without "MTV".  Does it make sense?  No, it doesn't.  But it would make sense if "on" were part of a phrasal verb.
