Mensagem:  In trying to determine if the difference between the two major dialects of Portuguese is bigger than the difference between BrE and AmE, we have to look at the history of the countries involved. Except for a relatively short period of distance that followed America's independence war in the second half of the 18th Century, the two English-speaking countries have enjoyed unique cultural, commercial and political ties. It was no coincidence that the Titanic was sailing from London to New York when it sank in 1912. US-UK alliances became especially strong after World War I and II. Portugal and Brazil however have experienced almost 2 centuries of isolation after the Portuguese royal family returned to Portugal in 1821 and Brazil declared independence in 1822. Although the level of linguistic differences is difficult to determine objectively, we can today see an important difference between Brazilian and European Portuguese in the rhythm of speech, which is one of the distinctive features of a language. While BrE and AmE are both stress-timed, Brazilian Portuguese is syllable-timed and European Portuguese is predominantly stress-timed.
