Mensagem:  I believe you, Marialva.  If an American is going to speak a second language, it will probably be Spanish.  I mentioned it in my post because a knowledge of Spanish is not necessarily of much help in learning Portuguese.  It is quite easy to comingle the languages and come out with Portunhol.  I heard a lot of Portunhol in Rio Grande do Sul.  I knew an Argentine who could no longer speak decent Spanish.  He had the two languages so entwined that it was hopeless!  The night I met him, he was speaking with a Brazilian in a little Gaucho shop in Gramado.  I listened for about 15 minutes trying to decide if they were Brazilians trying to speak Spanish or Argentines-Uruguayans trying to speak Portuguese.  It turned out that there were one of each.
