Mensagem:  Apart from what you've just told us, PPAULO, toward may indicate attitude about something.

In the sentence "Juquinha's nice feelings toward Zé's friends have not changed," Juquinha has something going in sympathy or affection for Zé's friends, holds Zé's friends in high esteem, would probably lend them a million dollars cash if they ever needed it. In other words, J really feels drawn toward Zé's friends probably because they usually treat people nicely like brothers.

So seem J's feelings toward Zé's.

If J worked toward his doctorate, we'd think of a studious, hard-working J doing everything within reach to get the degree, title, or rank of a doctor.

I can't imagine J working "to" his doctorate, though.

Before leaving, I must say I look toward the mastery of the mental process involving English as a second language. (I anticipate or somehow seek to ready myself for the mastery... etc by studying hard whatever.)
