Mensagem:  The supercilious 'putting on airs' type would appear to belong to a different age - a by-gone era of 'proper' ladies and gents in their finery

I've heard the expression used with the additional: 'putting on airs (and graces')

a 'wannabe' is an entirely different creature - just a crude, grasping pretender - although the concepts do have some overlap
