Celia, there is nothing wrong with "He is a good dog for me." I can
think of lots of contexts that would make the sentence sound quite
normal. He keeps you company, he protects you, he makes you laugh, etc.
"He is a good dog to me" sounds weird. How could he be good to you? Does he bring you a bone when you are hungry? Does he wash the dishes for you? Does he remember your birthday and gives you expensive presents and flowers? Probably not.
