Business language is essentially full of jargon.
In day to day communication jargon should be avoided, unless it is part of your company's culture and one is required to use that particular language.
I believe your friend is telling you that "he wants to work on those extra tasks or exceptions right when they come up using a specific process designed just for those exceptions.
Does your friend manage by exception? Does Management by Exception have anything to do with what he does in his job?
