Well, maybe. And I know what you meant and feel about it, but there are a lot of them, not there but right here in Brazil.
More, there are a lot of French citizens that come to Cabedelo, for instance, in their yachts for tourism and there a lot of them that grasp some Portuguese.
Naturally, Dale is a rare breed, having such a mastering of the language. But the point was, there are plenty of non-nationals that grasp the basic of it. I have seem such awkward words and sentences. And not from the lowest ranks of the society, I have seem plenty of them, in the centres of cities like Natal, in the shop signs, for instance (so designed by people that have money and acess to some level of education).
Once a guy said an anedocte to me in wich somebody had announced in a sign on the door "Ensina-se português, e vende-se calvão!".
