I haven't heard the expression, Fran. I like the image. A similar expression that has a good image of disorder and confusion is "like a Chinese fire drill". André, it's very common even for natives to misunderstand words in speeches and songs.People will swear, for example, that in a Clearwater Revival song the lyrics say "There's a bathroom on the right". Actually, the words are "There's a bad moon on the rise." Years ago I wrote down the words to many songs by Anita Baker. When I saw the lyrics in print, I was shocked at the number of my mistakes. In many cases, frankly, I preferred my "version" of her songs. You'll find this on the Internet where listeners will post lyrics. They cannot agree. One person hears one thing, another hears something else. |
