Assunto:  Play the guitar

Yeah, when it comes to the subject of playing instruments it is advisable (aka grammatically correct) to use THE, before the name of the instrument played.

  Some instances:

I play the guitar and the banjo and the harmonica.
I play the guitar and sing.
I play the guitar, and the flute.
I play the guitar and now learning to play the piano.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

But you can find some sites in wich they don´t use this rule; firstly musicians don´t always go hand in hand with grammarians...second there are certain structures that don´t "hurt" our eyes at a first sight. So, for example:

   - It's important to me to help everyone that want to play guitar
   - I learned to play guitar with GuitarMasterPro.net Practice.
   - Our guitar lessons on DVD will allow you to learn to play guitar on your own

-Lear how to play guitar in an hour...

May not draw attention (raise eyebrows) to the listener/reader while coming from a musician/singer etc.   Whereas it would do, if you found it in an essay/school assignment.
