"Please" and "thank you" are very important in American culture. I met many Chileans when I was young, and I thought them to be the most polite people I had ever met. To my surprise, they thought we said "please" and "thank you" far too often. As parents, we often pretend not to hear a child unless "please" is used in a request. And if "Thank you" is not said when something is received, you will hear, "What do we say?" The kid is gently forced to say "Thank you". |
